More Access for Canadian Beef to China

Some exciting news was delivered in China earlier this week.

They are allowing the importation of Canadian fresh-chilled beef in a pilot project.

Executive Vice President of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, Dennis Laycraft, say the Chinese market is evolving more quickly than any other market in the world.

Laycraft, along with another colleague, recently accompanied Federal Ag Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, to China.

Previously, Canadian beef exports had been limited to frozen boneless beef, and last year bone-in beef was approved in principle.

Laycraft says, as far as Canadian beef exports, China follows the U.S. and Mexico, but has recently moved ahead of Japan.

He says, they anticipate they will receive approval to move product in a matter of weeks.

A First for Canola in Western Canada

2017 marked the first year that canola has surpassed all-wheat acreage in Western Canada.

Over the years, canola has become a key crop for many producers, with over 20 million acres being grown in Western Canada, 90% of which is exported.

Warren Ward, an Agronomy Specialist with the Canola Council of Canada, says we are in a really good place within the canola industry right now.

Producers are encouraged to visit the keep it clean website for some best management practices, which include not pushing canola rotations, storing canola properly, careful use of registered pesticides, as well as disease information on blackleg, clubroot and more.
