India Issues 30 Per Cent Import Duty on Chickpeas and Lentils

India has decided to impose a 30 per cent import duty on chickpeas and lentils, effectively immediately.

The Indian Government says, production of the two crops is expected to be high during the upcoming season, and if allowed unabated, are likely to negatively affect the interest of India's farmers.

This new import duty is in addition to the 50 per cent import duty that has been issued on yellow peas.

India is Canada's top export market for pulse crops.

Barlow Reflects on the Biggest Challenges for Agriculture in 2017

Associate Ag Critic, John Barlow, says having Canada's trade agreements at risk has been challenging this year.

Barlow says, it's very unusual Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, is not a critical part of the negotiation teams on these trade agreements.

A Highlight of 2017 for Canada's Ag Minister

One of the highlights of 2017 for Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, was agreement on the new Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP).

CAP is set to replace the current Growing Forward 2 Agreement.

"There's one thing that I was told when we started the hearings with the agricultural sector; do not have a lapse, do not have a lapse. In fact, we're ready for applications, we will be in the first part of next year, and the money will be ready to roll out after April the 1st, so there will be no lapse, and that's thanks to the agricultural ministers across the Provinces and Territories."

MacAulay has set up an external review panel to evaluate the current suite of business risk management programs effectiveness and impact on growth and innovation.

The panel will meet through the winter and spring of 2018.
