The Okotoks EcoCentre will have new operating hours starting in 2017.

Due to the success of the Universal Recycling Program that launched in October the Town has noticed a bit of inactivity on certain days of the week.

Waste Services Manager Paul Lyons says they've seen a drop in the amount of materials in areas of recycling and organics.

"We figured that if we had a program where residents had the convenience of using a blue cart or organics cart then they would perhaps choose to use it at home rather than drive it down to the depot," Lyons says.

The EcoCentre will be closed on Sundays and Mondays but with some special days where operations are longer or start earlier.

Lyons says that will help fill the void by not being open on those days.

"We're extending the opening hours on a Saturday by an hour and then on Thursdays we're extending the hours. This is really to provide an avenue for residents who are driving from Calgary, but still have products that they want to drop off."

Effective on January 1, 2017 the EcoCentre hours will be:

Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday and Monday closed and all statuary holidays closed.
