While some cattle producers are already finished spring calving season others are just getting into it.

Wade Nelson at Highwood Valley Ranch says it's time to just put your head down and move on.

"The market is such a global, continental thing now so at this point when you're calving cows you kind of just put that all by the wayside, but I mean as far as where the industry's going I think we're in a good place," he says.

He says the last year has taught them that with these big consolidated kill plants, if they get shut down for any reason it can really back things up.

"When you have basically two outfits killing the vast majority of all the cattle in Canada, I mean it's a fear but it's more or less out of our control, but I think the industry is pretty strong," Nelson says.

Nelson calves through to the end of May and they usually brand in early June.
